79 Fengyang Road, was built in 1905, and is listed in the First Group of Excellent Historical Architecture of Shanghai and the sites of historical interest and cultural relics under the protection of the municipal government of Shanghai.
This French Renaissance Revival type garden house adopts classical order, with strong horizontal lines, precise scale, symmetric elevation, and majestic ornament. The center stairway extends to both left and right sides lead to the hall on the second floor. The fine ornaments at many places, like balcony fence, show the style of Art Nouveau movement, which was quite popular in Europe during the end of 19th Century to the beginning of 20th Century.
This house was formerly the residence of General Director of Public Director Board of French Concession. After the Anti-Japanese War, it was the first premise of Asia Pacific Office of World Health Organization of United Nation. After 1949, Sino-Soviet Union Friendship Association Shanghai Branch settled in here. Then it was used by Craft & Art Research Institute. Former American President Reagan, Greatest Boxer Ali etc visited here. Some scenes of movies, e.g. , Sisters of Song Family, are taken from here.
