18/20 Gao’an Road

18/20 Gao’an Road was built in 1939, and is listed in the Fourth Group of Excellent Historical Architecture of Shanghai.

This garden house with modern architecture features, has simple exterior and lines. Many parts of this building use curved lines instead of straight edges, like the balcony, the parts between each floor’s stairs and windows, showing some features of streamline type, which was popular in 1930s-1940s. Only two bearing columns in the lobby of ground floor adopt the style of classical Doric Columns.

This house was formerly the private residence of Rong Desheng, who was the famous industrial entrepreneur in China. It was at the lane entry that occurred the astonishing Case of Kidnapping of Rong Desheng in 1946. It was used by Juvenile’s Home of Xu Hui District, and was renamed as Children’s Palace of Xu Hui District.
