53 Hengshan Road

53 Hengshan Road, The International Church, was built in 1925, and the three-storey side building at west was built in 1936. It is listed in the First Group of Excellent Historical Architecture of Shanghai and the sites of historical interest and cultural relics under the protection of the municipal government of Shanghai.

The Gothic Renaissance church with brick-wood structure consists of big hall and three-storey side building, forming L shape. The steep gable roof adopts herringbone type wood roof frame, similar to British hanging-roof style with its shape. The stain glass window at the main entrance, the platform of the altar, and the windows in the back of the church are all in curved shape.

This building was firstly named as Community Church, which was the biggest Christian church in Shanghai at that time. As most of attendees were Americans, so it was named as American church. In World War II, since many European and some Chinese came here, so it was renamed as International Church.
