This building has features of Western Veranda Style, with rectangular or mouth-like layout. The wooden beam & column frame structure for interior & exterior gallery is the most unique feature, quite different from brick masonry arch and colonnade structure, which is usually adopted in the Western Veranda Style architecture. It makes the architecture more simple, compact and unique, plus gentle inclined tile roof with feature of gable and hip roof, hence is called a masterpiece for integrating Chinese and Western culture. Inside the building, there is a Chinese style courtyard, which is the other uniqueness.
Originally, there was a stair leading to the second floor. Surrounding the courtyard, it forms the internal public space and streamline of traffic. On the top there is triangle glass skylight, making the courtyard a bright public space.
After establishment, this building was the first dorm building in the school, now is the C.Y.Tung Maritime Museum of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The show rooms present legendary life of Mr. C.Y.Tung, who is one of the Top Seven Shipping Tycoons in the world.
