The Former Library, 1954 Huashan Road

The Former Library in 1954 Huashan Road was built in 1919, and is listed in the Second Group of Excellent Historical Architecture of Shanghai.

This building with hybrid-style features has three storeys with hybrid structure and mouth-like layout. There is big platform at the entrance, and above is balcony of the second floor. There are masonry moldings around arcade window, which is Baroque style decoration on the facade, showing characteristic of hybrid-style.

This building was library of the former South Ocean Public School, which was established in 1896 by Mr. Sheng Xuanhuai, who was deputy director of Court of Judicature, and Minister of Posts and Communication in late Qing Dynasty. In 1921, this school was consolidated with Tang Shan Industrial School, Peking Post & Telegraph School, Transportation Study Institution. And the new school name have been used till now. It’s now the School History Museum of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
