811 Hengshan Road

811 Hengshan Road, Little Red House, was built in 1921, and is listed in the Fourth Group of Excellent Historical Architecture of Shanghai and the sites of historical interest and cultural relics under the protection of the district government of Xuhui.

This detached garden villa with distinct influence of the Nouveau Beaux Arts movement, is called Little Red House due to its slope roof under red tile and red brick wall. The roof is especially characteristic in the twofold slope. The wide overhang of the eaves is supported with wooden struts, which also serve as a unique decoration for the villa. Some elegant designs about the curves and decorations correspond to the wide, arc-shaped frontal steps, creating an interesting style of differences within the uniformity.

This house accommodated French EMI in 1930, Shanghai Phonograph Record Factory after the 1949, and China Phonograph Record Company Shanghai Branch in 1980s, witnessing the development of phonograph industry in China in one century. Famous musician Mr.Nie Er, Mr.Xian Xinghai, worked here; Chinese opera artist Mr.Mei Lanfang, Mr.Tan Xingpei, movie star Ms.Zhou Xuan, Ms.Ruan Lingyu, they all worked here for phonograph recording. Now it's Little Red House Restaurant.
