The Building No.1, 138 Yixueyuan Road

The Building No.1 in 138 Yixueyuan Road was built in 1936, and is listed in the Second Group of Excellent Historical Architecture of Shanghai.

This multi-storey building with combined Chinese and Western style was designed by Long Chang Architecture Company. The facade has three sections with different style. The first section has governmental architecture features in Qing Dynasty, e.g. red column, yellow glazed tile, traditional Chinese patterns on the beams under the eaves, and Chinese mythical beasts on the roof ridges.

Nevertheless the dormer window on the roof reveals the influence of Shanghai local architecture style. The geometric patterns at the entrance of ground floor base are similar to traditional Chinese decorative patterns but with a trace of Art Deco flavor , while the gardening and in front of the building are entirely from western design.

This building was originally a medical school, established by Mr. Yan Fuqin and other people in medical society, for the purpose of teaching Chinese student by Chinese teacher. After 1949, the National Medical School in Shanghai was renamed as Shanghai No.1 Medical School, then Shanghai Medical University, and now is the Medical School of Fudan University.
