The Zai Jun Building, 320 Yueyang Road

The Zai Jun Building in 320 Yueyang Road was built in 1930, and is listed in the Second Group of Excellent Historical Architecture of Shanghai.

Viewed from top, this Gothic style building is grid shape, with a yard inner side, stressing vertical lines on facade. The protruding vertical wall between windows stretches upward, and narrows progressively. Its top protrudes the parapet wall, showing some trace of Gothic architecture.

The supporting square column between successive round arch at the porch of entrance is similar to Corinthian column. The decorative lancet on wall column between windows also represents style of Gothic architecture, while the cement member protruding outer wall is simple geometry shape, which embodies style of Art Deco. The outline of this building is quite alike to the library of Tokyo University in Japan.

It was formerly the Shanghai Natural Science Research Institute. After the Anti-Japanese War, it was renamed as the Central Research Institute of National Government. After 1949, it has been used by the Physiology Research Institute of China Science Academy Shanghai Subsidiary.
